Thinking of skiing at a Durango Mountain Resort?

From a human movement and performance standpoint, there are some areas of the body that an improved awareness of may actually make the Ski Season of 08-09 the best one yet! While the lower body gets most of the attention in the gym due to the "leg burn" that we ALL have felt, it would be a form of neglect to not train the areas north of the hips.

It is impossible to "single out" one part of the body since the human body is ONE unit and that if one area of the body is "off," then every other will be effected. To simplify this concept, identifying the importance of 5 specific areas of the body or 5 Stations can help illustrate how a deficiency on one part of the chain will effect the other parts of the chain. To no surprise, these 5 Stations span the entire body.

The 5 Stations are the foot/ankle, the knees, the hips, the lumbar spine and the thoracic spine. Further, these areas are assigned to be either an area of stability or mobility (original idea from Gray Cook and Mike Boyle). So if we look at all 5 Stations it should (hopefully) look like this:

Foot/Ankle - Mobile

Knees - Stable

Hips - Mobile

Lumbar Spine - Stable

Thoracic Spine - Mobile

You may note that all these areas alternate from being an area of mobility or stability. Based on these guidelines, if the role of the area changes (due to injury, overuse, lack of proper training, etc.), then the role of the following areas MUST change due to how the body compensates.

For today, let's get into the foot/ankle and we will cover the other 4 stations at a later date. For example, let's assume (very carefully) that my foot/ankle becomes more stable than mobile. Now, if a particular task requires my foot/ankle to be mobile (and it doesn't have it because it is more stable) then it WILL get the mobility from somewhere else. Often, this extra mobility may come from somewhere where we don't want it to come from (knees or lower back...OUCH!). What ends up happening is a domino effect in which every station will start to change it's role (either being an area of stability or mobility) which throws the entire chain "out of whack."

How will the body compensate for a foot/ankle that is not mobile enough? If someone is given the command to squat down and their ankles don't move too well, they will typically more more at the hips to make up what they don't have at the foot/ankle joint. Think about this for yourself...as you sit into your chair, do you decend into a smooth squat where you bend at the feet/ankles, knees and hips? Or on your way down do you reach a point where you just "fall" into your chair...possibly due to a lack of mobility in the foot/ankle complex??

How about on the slopes? A skier and snowboarder is required to "flex" into their boots during a number of different times throughout the day on the mountain. If there is restricted movement in the foot/ankle, what will the compensation look like? Perhaps a skier will be more prone to be a "back-seat" skier and the snowboarder will begin to flex more at the hips to get closer to the snow?

These are only speculations, however by applying the laws of human function to the slopes, logic can tell us that something less than optimal will occur. Now, this does not mean that one cannot successfully get down the slopes...its just that you may have to work a little harder, thats all! Offset this with the cost of a lift ticket, gas to get to the mountain and the cost of gear and now it becomes that much more difficult to get "your moneys worth!"

Long before skiing was a sport, skis were actually utilized for both transportation and work alike. Located in Sweden, the oldest ski known to man is short, wide and believed to be around 4500 years old. However, ancient rock and cave drawings reveal that skis may have existed even earlier than 4500 years ago. Originally, travelers or hunters may have used skis since they were used quite commonly during the extended winter months in Scandinavia and Northern Russia. Speed was a non-issue when making the early designs of skis as they were needed more to keep people on the snows surface while they moved around and traveled.

When looking into the history of downhill skiing, peoples indigenous to the Telemark region of Norway were credited with, in the 1700's, taking skiing and turning it into a sport. They also are credited with inventing both the Christie and the Telemark turns to control downhill descent speeds. And with a fondness of alpine ski jumping, these pioneers brought into existence the disciplines of Nordic and Alpine skiing. Of course the distinctions we make today between various skiing disciplines were not made hundreds of years ago. In fact, early renditions of skis simply had a boot which was secured to your ski at the toe area only, leaving your heel free to either move down or up. This is now what we call a Nordic style ski.

As you begin to look more closely into the history of downhill skiing, you will surely find that, in the 1800's, the original organized jumping, skiing and cross country events took place. And into the 1900's skiing began to flourish as the Norwegians neighbors, the Europeans, began to discover how enthralling skiing could be. During that time period, Nordic style equipment was still heavily used. This fact is highlighted in 1924 with the advent of the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France. The games only featured five sports while the two skiing events were Nordic. Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping. And in 1932, the Winter Olympic Games opened in Lake Placid, NY and featured Cross Country Skiing as a new Olympic sport.

And as skiers forged on and tackled ever more difficult terrain, their equipment and skill levels needed to adapt to these challenges. This is because turns like the Telemark were sufficient for Norway's rolling, flat terrain but lacked the necessary control that is crucial for European slopes such as the Alps. Hence, this is how the idea of Alpine skiing was born. When reading about the history of downhill skiing, you will find that Alpine skiing equipment utilizes a boot which is mounted to a ski with both the heel and toe section of the boot attached to it. This provides the skier with more control in order to ski faster and negotiate steep terrain.

Slalom and downhill Alpine skiing came into being using this newer and more modern equipment. In fact, in the Winter Games in Austria in 1936, the first alpine skiing event was introduced to the Olympics. It was called the combined. Also during the period of the 30's, Europeans took up alpine skiing and its popularity continued to steadily climb. During this time, the first ski lifts were constructed which cancelled out the physically draining task of climbing up a mountain before descending. After World War II, ski areas began to open up when Switzerland and Austria developed Alpine ski resorts.

In 1952 at the Oslo Winter Olympics, the new discipline dubbed Giant Slalom was debuted. The GS actually combined aspects form previous alpine skiing disciplines. And Super G, a Downhill and Giant Slalom hybrid, was the fourth alpine skiing discipline added to both the 1988 Winter Olympic Games and the 1983 World Cup events as well. Over this period of time, skiing equipment manufacturers have been developing safer, faster equipment as athletes have taken and combined the new equipment with a higher skill level and better training in order to improve all facets of this sport. As the debate continues on about which skiing discipline is the premiere one, we know one thing for sure. All styles of skiing are growing in popularity, and skiing can be enjoyable for an entire lifetime.

Korean Firm Investing in Discount Shoes

Three unnamed South Korean shoemakers are set to invest US$200 million in Indonesia, with two planning to build new factories and the third to expand output of Adidas shoes at its existing site. Hopefully this will lead to an expansion of the offering of discount shoes.

Eddy Widjanarko, chairman of the Indonesian Shoemakers Association, said Friday the two new factories would be in Tangerang, Banten and Surabaya, East Java, and that the one set to undergo expansion was in Sukabumi, West Java.

"All the companies have already obtained principle licenses from the BKPM (Investment Coordinating Board)," he said at the Industry Ministry during a press conference on the Indo Leather and Footwear exhibition that will take place next Tuesday through Friday.

"They said they chose Indonesia because its (economy) was growing well."

The three companies will reach a full production capacity of up to 1.4 million pairs of shoes per month between the end of this year and mid next year.

Indonesia has two other factories producing shoes for Adidas, the world's second-largest sports apparel company, both with monthly outputs of 600,000 pairs of shoes.

"With the factory in Sukabumi producing 1 million pairs per month alone, the three factories will yield 1.4 million pairs of shoes per month combined, exceeding both PT HASI and PT NASA's outputs of 600,000 pairs per month," Eddy said.

NASA -- PT Naga Parama Shoes Industry -- and HASI -- PT Hardaya Aneka Shoes Industry -- produces shoes for American athletic apparel company Nike.

Eddy said the three companies had not engaged local businesses in running the planned factories.

"The two factories are completely new and will be self-sufficient; from the raw material process through to distribution," he said.

"Meanwhile, the factory in Sukabumi will actually undergo a huge expansion that will see its production triple."

The country's shoe industry has been on the rise since the European Union in 2006 began imposing anti-dumping duties on leather shoe imports from China and Vietnam as a way to protect European industries from low-priced imports.

The industry recorded shoe export revenue of more than $400 million in the first half of this year, 8.6 percent higher than the $396 million recorded at the same time last year, Eddy said.

At least 20 Chinese shoemakers are currently looking to open factories in Indonesia to evade the duties.

"Those 20 companies are big, employing between 30,000 and 60,000 workers," he said.

"Taiwanese companies have also expressed their interests in investing in and developing a shoe hub in Indonesia."

SPOKANE -- It wasn't too long ago that the cost of an airline ticket covered everything the weary travel could want: food, drinks and even the bags. Now more and more airlines are charging for checked discount luggage.

Industry giant and trend-setter United Airlines has announced it is going to charge its passengers an extra $15 for the first bag checked. Another major carrier, Delta, has hiked its fee to $50 for a second checked bag, which has many potential passengers looking for alternatives. They are turning to shipping their luggage to their destination ahead of them.

At a UPS store in Spokane, Washington business is up noticeably because travelers are packing their bags ahead of time. The increased luggage fees aren't flying with with many passengers, including Delores Biggs.

"That $25 for your second suitcase, or first suitcase, that is just ridiculous, I'd rather walk," said Biggs.

Nancy Hernetiaux, an employee at the South Hill UPS store in Spokane, says many more customers are bringing their luggage because they are over 50 pounds and they don't want to pay the high cost.

"Business is up at least 25%," said Hernetiaux.

The cost savings are noticeable. For example, if you ship your luggage Monday in a box weighing 50 pounds it would cost you $34.99. That's cheaper than the $50 it would cost you to fly with a second bag on Delta and potentially other airlines.

Here's a brief overview of luggage fees:

Alaska Air charges $25 for a second bag, so does United.

Northwest charges $15 for a first bag and $25 for a second.

Delta charges $50 for a second.

Southwest doesn't charge until the third bag and for that they charge $25.
